How Countertops Are Templated and Fabricated

A finished countertop looks simple once it is installed. Getting there takes a series of precise steps, and small errors early in the process show up as gaps and bad fits later. Here is how a raw slab becomes the countertop in your kitchen.

Templating

Templating is where we capture the exact dimensions of your space. After your cabinets are set and level, we come out and create a detailed template of every counter surface, capturing walls that are not perfectly square, corners, overhangs, and the locations for your sink and cooktop. Real kitchens are rarely perfectly straight, so this step is about measuring what is actually there, not what the plans assume.

Slab layout

Back at the shop, the template is used to plan how your pieces will be positioned on the slab. Natural stone has movement, veining, and color variation across a single slab, so this step is part precision and part craft. We lay out the pieces to keep veining flowing naturally across seams and to put the best part of the stone where it will be seen most.

Cutting

Once the layout is set, the slab is cut. Favrstone uses precision cutting technology that turns the digital layout into exact cuts, including the straight lines, curves, miters, and sink and faucet openings your project calls for. Precise cutting at this stage is what allows the pieces to drop into place cleanly on installation day, with tight seams and edges that line up.

Edge shaping and polishing

After the pieces are cut, the edges are shaped to your chosen profile and polished. Whether you picked a simple eased edge or a detailed ogee, this is where that profile is formed and finished so it feels smooth and consistent along the entire run.

Quality check

Before anything leaves the shop, the pieces are checked against the template and inspected for fit, finish, and edge quality. Catching an issue in the shop is easy. Catching it in your kitchen is not, which is why the check happens before delivery.

Why the process matters

Every step builds on the one before it. Accurate templating makes for a clean layout. A good layout and precise cutting make for tight seams. Careful edge work makes the counter feel finished. When each stage is done right, installation day is quick and the result fits like it was made for the space, because it was.
